2018 has come and gone and here we are, living in 2019.
I set a number of goals for myself and Brody last year and we achieved…basically none of them. And I’m okay with that! Honestly!
2018 was a year of learning and growth for me. I learned a ton about myself and about my dog. I’ve trained with more people, gotten more exposure to more ideas and methods, and have just generally broadened my horizons. I’m more confident as a handler now and I’m in a better position to advocate for myself and my dog. So while we may not have checked off everything I was hoping to check off, this past year was still a success in my book.
Our goals for 2018 were:
We achieved our CGC and 2/3 of our RE. We tried for our IPO1 and failed tracking, ending with 52/88/90. We tried for our CD and embarrassed ourselves.
But we learned a lot last year, and that’s what matters, right?
For 2019, we have most of the same goals, plus or minus a couple.
I’d like to get the last leg of our RE (Rally Excellent).
I’m going to drop the CD as a goal for this year. Brody just doesn’t have the maturity and I don’t have the inclination to keep trying to force the square peg into the round hole. I’m going to call that realization growth on my part and just move on. We may circle back to the CD when Brody is older (maybe when he’s 12 or something), but for now, I’m shelving it.
And IPO is no more, so we’ll have to drop the IPO1 from our list as well. This year I’d like to get his IGP1-3. A lofty goal, but doable, I think. He has the obedience down pat, and while we still have some work to do in protection, I don’t think we have any major obstacles left (knock on wood). We’ll need to do some serious work on our tracking, but that’s really just a matter of getting the reps in.
RE and IGP 1-3.
I’d also like to try some barn hunt maybe this year. And some agility (though we probably won’t ever qualify in that).
There is a mantrailing title that I’m interested in targeting for 2020.
And, who knows, maybe we’ll try out some Mondioring in 2020 as well.
I’m nothing if not stupidly ambitious.
I’ll also be on the hunt for my next puppy, though I’m not in any hurry. I had chosen a breeder and put down a deposit a few years ago, but having since learned more about what I like in a dog, I’ve let that deposit go and am exploring more options. So maybe a puppy this year. Maybe 2020. It all depends on whether I find a breeding that I like or not. I’m learning about this thing called patience.
So that’s the plan for 2019. We’ll have to see how it all plays out.
I’d love to hear what all of your goals are for this year! Send me an e-mail, message me on Facebook, or post a comment!
